By: Isaac Marion
Genre: Romance/Fantasy & Futuristic
Publishers Summary:
'R' is a zombie. He has no name, no memories, and no pulse, but he has dreams. He is a little different from his fellow Dead.
Amongst the ruins of an abandoned city, R meets a girl. Her name is Julie and she is the opposite of everything he knows - warm and bright and very much alive, she is a blast of colour in a dreary grey landscape. For reasons he can't understand, R chooses to save Julie instead of eating her, and a tense yet strangely tender relationship begins.
This has never happened before. It breaks the rules and defies logic, but R is no longer content with life in the grave. He wants to breathe again, he wants to live, and Julie wants to help him. But their grim, rotting world won't be changed without a fight...
My Review:
I made the mistake of watching the movie first, but in my defense I didn't even known it was based on a book until the credits rolled. So, naturally I picked up the book thinking it would be twice as great as I thought the movie was.
To my surprise it was...just minus the inner comments about not being creepy. Lol. Though I did like the book, for me it was a half-an-half. While the idea of Zombie and romance together in one book, let alone meaning the zombie found some, never crossed my mind, it was a nice turn around. Though I'm thankful the romance side of this story didn't glare like a shinny twilight vampire under the sun, I do wish the pace had been a bit faster. I felt like a zombie myself, shambling my way through the book. There where some things, like the zombie sex, that could have been left out altogether and the cursing. Now I don't have a problem with either, but both felt out of place sometimes.
Aside from that, the book as a whole was a fun and enjoyable read! I liked the fact that Isaac Marion explained why his zombies liked "BRAINS!" and that it wasn't just for the hell of it. It's great to see some background and even the lifestyle of these zombies. I guess being dead isn't so bad after all...at least if you're a zombie.
